AdDU SHS Celebrates Buwan ng Wika

By Janela Pauline Bañanola |

On August 25, 2023, the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Senior High School (SHS) culminated its Buwan ng Wika program with the theme: Katutubong Wika: Wika ng Kapayapaan, Seguridad, at Inklusibong Pagtutupad ng Katarungang Pagpapatupad in the School's gymnasium; the university, staff, students, and administrators were in attendance.

As a tradition in every school year, AdDU starts the year with a mass of the Holy Spirit, presided over by Fr. Jboy Gonzalez SJ.

During the sermon, Fr. Jboy called students to actively participate in the mass due to the malfunctioning of the LED, which meant that no screen was present to display the slides prepared for the entirety of the program.

Fr. Jboy empathized that the Holy Spirit is the fire that teaches students how to use and develop their minds and hearts and use these aspects in their journey in life.

The Tagalog language was used throughout the mass to celebrate Buwan ng Wika.

To officially start the Buwan ng Wika program, the hosts, Ms. Dema Arancon of 12-Dajani and Mr. Michael Dela Salde of the Filipino cluster, called on the SHS respective stands of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). Accountancy and Business Management (ABM) to heighten the enthusiasm for the program.

For this year's Buwan ng Wika AdDU SHS orchestrated the following events: Pagsulat ng Sanaysay, Pagsulat ng Tula, Elektronikong Poster at Slogan, Sining at Gawa: 3D Artifacts Contest, Masining na Pagkukwento, Awitenista OPM Duet, and Parada ng Kasuotang Mindanaoan.

Before the culmination program, all events mentioned were already performed and judged beforehand in the leading days of the program, except Parada ng Kasuotang Mindanaoan and Awitenista OPM Duet; these events would be completed and evaluated in the gym.

Maintaining the crowd's energy was the lively performance of LIAM, as the contestants of the Parada ng Kasuotang Mindanaoan and Awitenista OPM Duet joined them on stage.

Mrs. Joan Grace Palconit, the Director of the Filipino cluster, gave the opening remarks, she said that “Ang wika at kultura natin ay magkabuhol, kung ito ay magkabuhol ito ay may diversidad, kung may diversidad ang kultura, gayundin ang wika.”

Following the opening remarks was the Parada ng Kasuotang Mindanaoan; each strand in grades 11 and 12 had one male and one female representative to showcase Mindanao's rich culture through clothing.

The Parada judges were Mrs. Ma'am Aujefel Amor Lee, the Assistant Director of Academics, Fr. Jboy, the Director of Formation, and Sir. Ricardo "Riki” P. Enriquez, the Director of AdDU SHS as the head judge.

In the Awitenista OPM Duet, students and teachers were encouraged to participate with the HUMSS and ABM strands, having both teacher and student duets for the contest, while STEM had a student duet performance.

After both events, during the deliberation period, the Maskara club members performed an intricate traditional Moro folk dance from Maguindanao called Silong sa gandi.
