As Women's History Month draws to a close, let's take a moment to honor and recognize the lives of those whose roles remain invisible and unheard of. Here is a mini-collection of poems crafted by the Literary Department.
"Who is She?"
By Phoemela Gutierrez
Who is she, who walks with her head up high?
Who does not stumble in high heels amid the rainy sky;
With paralyzed legs, she stands with all her might;
And who struts down the runway in the spotlight?
Who is she, who shines in the crowd?
Whose diamonds deflect the shadow's shroud;
In a loud voice, she commands her court:
“Today, thwart thy woman standards!"
Who is she? Who is breaking out of her mold?
“How dare she defy stereotypes of the old?!"
Throw a hissy fit; you may; scream in rage, you can;
But know that she has never been made to fit your plan.
She is her own person;
Making herself a new version.
life, and its play
By Alexia Despares
often life becomes a play
except roles are not chosen
they are given
imagine the actors and actresses,
and the one in charge of the lights
there are people who make sure everything sounds right,
and someone in charge of heights.
there are people who prepare
both the costumes and props.
people who ensure the play goes smoothly,
without any stops
but at the end of the play,
you clap only for what you see.
not for people behind
the screen.
in the play called life,
guess which roles are played by women.
i’ll give you a hint:
it is not those you can see.
